Progress with the Plumbing?
The whole project has grown somewhat since I first discovered hot water leaking out of our tank. We have had about half a dozen firms in to give quotes and suggest various different ways of doing things, but we have finally sorted it all out and after looking at all the options we have decided to go for the complete package!
They will be taking out the tiny old tank downstairs in the cupboard in the scullery, rerouting all the pipes and then installing a new super-dooper double insulated stainless steel one upstairs in the old dressing room which is in between the main bedroom and the bathroom. (This will then be partitioned off to give me a proper airing cupboard with access from the landing and an en suite shower room for the main bedroom). We will then have a panel with 30 solar collector tubes installed on the roof at the back of the house, which should be able to supply all our hot water whenever the sun shines, and we will also be able to pipe hot water up to the attic at mains pressure when we get round to putting in another bathroom on the top floor. We will be getting a new condensing gas boiler as well, to top up the hot water when needed and to run the central heating system during the winter, (we have 15 large radiators over 3 floors!) as our old one is now only 65% efficient, so our gas bill should be reduced quite a lot!
I decided to have the lot done at once as it will work out cheaper than doing it in stages . Also, the whole house really needs redecorating, and the bathroom also needs some retiling, so it made sense to have all the dirty stuff out of the way before we got the rooms painted. Now I just have to clear all the junk out of the dressing room and find another home for it all!
